Sectional Point Repair in Columbiana

Columbiana straddles the Columbiana and Mahoning county line with a Main Street core from the 1800s, neighborhoods from the 1950s and 1960s around Firestone Park, and newer plats from the 1990s onward on former farmland. The camera finds old clay downtown, Orangeburg in the postwar streets, and settled PVC joints in flat, wet clay in the newer subdivisions.

Three generations of Columbiana housing

Downtown Columbiana along Main Street, Park Avenue and the streets near the old railroad has houses from the 1860s through the 1920s on vitrified clay laterals, many of them connected to sewer decades after the houses were built. The ring of neighborhoods around Firestone Park and along Route 14 and Route 164 went up in the 1950s and 1960s, when Orangeburg fiber pipe and clay tile were both in use. The plats of the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s on the east and south sides, including the Mahoning County portion of the city, are on PVC.

Basements are the rule in the older parts of town and common in the newer ones, so cast iron carries the line through the foundation wall in every era. The camera sees that iron first and then the yard pipe, and the condition of each is recorded separately because the fix for a scaled iron section is not always the fix for the clay or plastic beyond it.

Flat ground, clay and a shallow water table

Columbiana sits on nearly level glacial till, a heavy clay that drains slowly toward Bull Creek and the Middle Fork of Little Beaver Creek. The water table is close to the surface for much of the year, trenches stay wet, and frost reaches about 36 inches in winter. On old clay, that cycle opens joints. On Orangeburg, it crushes the pipe oval. On newer PVC, it shows up as settlement: a joint pulled apart or a sag where wet backfill consolidated.

The old sugar maples and oaks downtown and the silver maples and pin oaks in the postwar streets supply the roots. They enter clay joints, the seam where iron meets clay, and poorly glued plastic joints. On the newer plats the trees are younger and roots are less of a factor; standing water in a belly is the more common finding there.

Which method where

Cured-in-place pipe lining is the fix for round clay, cast iron or PVC with cracks, pulled joints and roots. After hydro jetting and root cutting, the installer inverts or pulls an epoxy-saturated felt liner through the pipe and cures it with hot water, steam or UV, creating a jointless sealed pipe from one access point. Because it stops groundwater infiltration, it also helps the city's system, which is a point the inspector will appreciate.

Oval Orangeburg on the Firestone Park era streets is a pipe bursting job, with fused HDPE pulled through between a pit at the house and a pit near the main. A deep belly in a newer PVC line is the other case lining cannot solve, since the liner would follow the sag; that section is burst or excavated and regraded, and the rest is lined. One bad joint on an otherwise good line is a sectional point repair.

One utility across two counties

Unusually for a town on a county line, Columbiana's sewer service does not split by county. The City of Columbiana utility department serves the whole city, issues the lateral permit, and sends its inspector to see the open pit or review the post-installation video. The city also permits any opening in the street, sidewalk or tree lawn. The owner is responsible for the lateral to the main, and the contractor pulls the permits.

Lining from a cleanout at the house generally avoids the right-of-way permit. Bursting with a receiving pit near the street brings it in, along with restoration conditions. In the wet plats the pit may need a pump running during the work, which the contractor should plan for in advance.

The day of the job and choosing a crew

The crew will camera the line, locate and mark it, record depth and the water level at the pit location if one is needed, jet the pipe and inspect again before committing to a method. The liner cures over a few hours with the house unable to drain. Bursting takes a day or two. Both end with a video of the finished pipe from house to main.

Ask the contractor how they would handle a belly, since in the newer parts of Columbiana that question separates crews that understand the ground from crews that line everything. Ask for the videos, the material spec and the warranty in writing. To compare installers who serve Columbiana, find a verified CIPP contractor and get a camera report from each one before signing.

Sectional Point Repair in Columbiana

Fix the spot, not the line

A sectional point repair treats a short length of pipe, usually two to six feet, instead of the whole lateral. A short fiberglass or felt liner saturated with resin is positioned over the defect on an inflatable packer, pressed against the wall, and cured in place. The rest of the line is untouched. Where the defect cannot be lined, the alternative is a small excavation at that exact spot, made possible because the camera and locator have already marked it to within inches.

When it makes sense

One identifiable defect, or two or three close together, on a line whose remaining footage is sound: a joint crushed when a driveway was poured over it, a single root-intruded joint under a parkway tree, a break where the lateral crosses another utility trench, or the transition where under-slab cast iron meets the clay or ABS running to the street.

When it does not

If the camera shows the same defect at every joint, or channeling along the whole bottom of a cast iron line, fixing one spot moves the next backup a few feet down the pipe. A full liner costs more today and far less over the next few years.

A fair test

Ask to see footage of the pipe on both sides of the proposed repair. If it is clean for the full run, a point repair is honest and economical. If it is not, ask why a full liner was not proposed.

Questions we hear in Columbiana

Who owns the sewer lateral in Columbiana?+

The property owner, from the house to the public main, including under the sidewalk and street. The City of Columbiana operates its own water and sewer utility for both the Columbiana County and Mahoning County portions of the city and issues the permit for lateral work.

Why do newer Columbiana laterals have bellies?+

The subdivisions on the edge of town were built on flat farmland with heavy clay and a high water table. Trenches dug in that ground stayed wet, the backfill never fully compacted, and the plastic pipe settled unevenly into low spots that trap solids and hold water.

Lining or bursting for a Columbiana home?+

Lining when the pipe is round, which covers most clay and cast iron downtown and most PVC in the plats. Bursting for oval Orangeburg on the 1950s and 1960s streets, collapsed clay, or a deep belly that has to be regraded before the rest can be lined.

How much time and disruption is involved?+

Lining is typically a one-day job from a single cleanout, with the house unable to drain for a few hours during the cure. Bursting takes one to two days and uses two small pits. Lawns, driveways and the mature trees stay in place.

What does it cost and when can it start?+

Work usually begins within days of the camera inspection and city permit. Price depends on length, depth, pipe material, the water table at the pit and whether a street connection needs a point repair. Every quote follows a video of the actual pipe. Estimates are free; call now.
